The Penta Group bought into Empik in 2012. Ten years later, it decided to sell a majority stake to Empik’s CEO Ewa Szmidt-Belcarz, who continues to lead the company. Penta retained a minority 49% stake in the company.

Empik is a Polish retail chain that was founded more than 70 years ago and has more than 300 brick-and-mortar stores in Poland. It offers services and products in the fields of culture and family entertainment—such as books, music, event tickets and school supplies—through various sales platforms.

The Empik Group also includes companies engaged in the publishing and distribution of traditional and digital content, podcasts and even series.

In recent years, Empik has made significant progress in digitizing its business. The e-commerce platform empik.com and the EmpikPlace marketplace are now used by more than 9 million shoppers and over 4,000 sellers.
